This programmer can be used to update the firmware on all KNX-compatible projects offered in this online shop.
The programmer features a USB-C port (including ESD suppressor), a boot and reset button, and a Prog button for convenient switching to programming mode.
The main board of the project is supplied with 3.3 V via USB when no bus voltage is present.
In addition, in projects with 2x 3.3 V bus voltage supplies, it is also possible to supply the second 3.3 V rail via USB.
For easy connection of a debugger, a 2x 5 PIN strip (1.27 mm), compatible with the J-Link “Cortex Debug Connector”, is available.
All KNX-compatible projects offered here feature the identical 2x 5-pin (2.54 mm) programmer connector. The pins on the board are slightly offset, allowing the programmer to be plugged in directly without a soldered header.
No matter how many KNX projects are ordered from this shop, the programmer is only needed once.
If you do not want to plug in the programmer directly but would rather use a cable, you can order a corresponding 20 cm extension cable.
A USB-C to USB-A and USB-C connection cable can also be ordered if required.
If you want to connect both the bus and the computer to a board via USB-C via the programmer at the same time, it is recommended to galvanically isolate the USB-C connection to prevent damage caused by different ground potentials. For this purpose, the USB-C Isolator be used.
Why is the programmer necessary?
Primarily for reasons of space: The USB socket (especially the modern USB-C version) is relatively large, as are the buttons for boot/reset. There is also the J-Link debug connection, which is often very useful, and the additional power supply mentioned above. In order to keep the individual project boards compact, all of these things are "outsourced" to the programmer, which is inexpensive and only needed once.
